Getting paid for small jobs

Longer note · updated October 2026

Small jobs are easy to under-manage. A simple routine for payment keeps them worth doing.

Agree before starting

Amount, currency, payment method and timing. For new clients, ask for part of the payment before you begin.

Send a clear invoice

Include your name, the client's name, a short description of the work, the amount, the due date and how to pay. Keep a copy.

Follow up calmly

If payment is late, send a short, polite reminder with the invoice attached. Most late payments are forgotten, not refused.

Record everything

Note each payment and its date. Side income is usually taxable, and records make that part simpler.

Watch the fees

Platforms and payment services keep a share. Check what actually arrives, not just the agreed price.
